Laina Aavasalmi Obituary

AAVASALMI, Laina 1918-2020  Died peacefully of natural causes in her 103rd year on Monday, May 25, 2020, at Revera Westside Care Home in Toronto (where she received wonderful care).  Loving mother of Helena (Edward) Piecuch of Binbrook, Tapani (Susan) Aavasalmi of Guelph, Henry (Janice) Aavasalmi of Mono and Hilkka Aavasalmi of Toronto.  Cherished Mummu of Christopher (Julie) Piecuch, Katrina (Paul) Gillott, Niles (Rebecca) Aavasalmi, Lisa Caron, Kristen (Steve) Sullivan, Karyn Aavasalmi & David (Jessica) Aavasalmi.  She also leaves dearly loved great-grandchildren Justis, Mya, Ava, Jami, Tiana, Danica, Brinnly, Dax, Aidyn, Garner, Karlisle, Drake, Maddyn, Thatcher, Isabelle, and Henry.  Also remembered by her dear nieces, nephews, relatives, and their families in Finland.  Laina was predeceased by her beloved husband Viljo (2004).  Laina was also predeceased by her sisters Mirja Partanen and Siiri Valkama in Finland.  

 

Laina was born in Vähäkyrö Finland and was a member of the Finnish Women’s Auxiliary (Lotta Svärd) during World War II.  She was a resident of South Porcupine for over 60 years and was employed by the City of Timmins for over 25 years.  She was a woman of faith and was actively involved at St. John’s Finnish Lutheran Church.  Many wonderful memories of Laina will remain including delicious Pulla Coffeebread and Finnish Pancakes, drinking from a cup and saucer, sleepovers, singing, and knitted socks and mitts.  Above all, her positive attitude, sense of humor, generosity, faith, and unconditional love.  Laina is now at peace in the care of the Good Shepherd she loved, who has seen her safely through to the other side.

 

Remembrance donations will be graciously received in her memory to her former residence in South Porcupine, Kulta Koti Finnish Seniors Home.  These may be made through Stinson Funeral Home, 100 Bruce Ave., South Porcupine ON 705-235-2900.  www.stinsonfuneralhome.net A private service of remembrance and committal will be conducted by her daughter, Rev. Hilkka Aavasalmi on Monday, June 1st at 1:00 pm.  A broader memorial service will take place at a later time.
